Chairman: "Backs to the wall from those left standing"
The Chairman was choking back tears as he spoke those words right after the final siren and seeing his core unit overcome a test of courage.
In the cooling evening of a long hot spring day in Sydney, the crowd was tense and concerned. They were not sure if the people's team could come back after the loss inflicted on them last week by the teenagers and the administrators of the game.
History has shown that the Overtouchers lift when there is a fight. They are known to scream the words 'Challenge Accepted' when life throws up its bad times.
Last night was a night like that and once again the mountain men from Terrey Hills sort glory and were rewarded with 9-3 victory.
VC goes missing in time of need
With only 8 players on the playing roster for last nights game, a message was received on my phone at 7.32pm from the VC stating " I'm out ! The wife not home yet ! Good luck !"
Firstly his grammar is terrible with the over use of exclamation marks. However, I will let that slide and address more important matters.
In a time of need the VC was missing. Yes family does come first, no question, but when you are allowed to go to Fiji mid-season in 2011 you would think you would try to make an effort this year.
A half time call from the Chairman to the VC confirmed the teams worst fears....the VC would not be charging to the game on his white horse with his long dark locks blowing in the wind, galloping across the car park to take the field and lead the Touchers to victory like he did so gallantly last year.
During the post match report a secret ballot was called on how the VC would be punished.
The vote was carried unanimously that the VC will not be rewarded any player of the match points for the remainder of the season from the 6 players left standing last night.
When called after the game the VC could not be found for comment.
Match report
So the Touchers took the field with the Magnificent 7, but just 1 minute into the game that damn sniper targeted another victim. Starting just his second game in the top division, Kiwi was shot down with a torn calf and left the field immediately.
This horrible incident was after the Kiwi arrived at the ground with shiny white new boots, reminiscent of Bob The Builders debut in season 2011.
New boots, a hard ground and age had presented another Overtoucher with another soft tissue injury. Calls have gone out for Kiwi to share the hyperbaric chamber with Faz.
With just 6 players left on deck the remaining warriors took on a team that also saw their playing ranks wittled down to 6 with leg injuries.
Big Bad Brett, coming off assignment in Mexico last week, delivered another professional performance. He too had new footwear but BBB had chosen to go for the soft sneaker option and he showed great coverage in defence and attack with the new attire.
I felt that Jonty played his best game in Overtouchers colours. He showed speed and deception in attack not seen since his childhood idol Ray Brannigan ran like a bullet for the Rabbitohs in the 60's and 70's. Jonty's two tries were just pretty to watch and the team will need more of that as the season progresses.
Supercoach Bill was inspirational through the middle of the park and down the right hand edge. In the player points awarded he was given at least 1 point from each of his team mates. A sign his efforts were gratefully accepted by all.
The Chairman has been Mr Consistency in 2012 and his leadership on this desperate night was just what was needed. His calculating breakdown of the oppositions defence was almost Wally Lewis like...but I shouldn't get that carried away. Maybe closer to the style former Warringah Rats no. 10's Rob Walton or Andy Grant would be closer to the mark.
But when things got tough it was Bob The Builder who stood tallest. Bob was clearly the best player in this, the game of his life. Scoring length of the field tries and running down the defence....did we know he was that quick?
His two try effort would have been three if not for Full Metal's white line fever when Bob was wide open. The glare from Bob to Full Metal was to suggest that it better not happen again.
So another victory goes to the Toucher's. They remain undefeated in their age division and are on track for a date with destiny on December 6th.
With Milton and Stu watching via Cable TV in the offshore locations the team will welcome their return to replace the injuries of Kiwi, Faz and Supercoach Bill away on assignment.
Reports that Faz has been taking great strides...well little ones in his recovery as his 'weg is still hurty'. It cannot be confirmed that his recovery has been helped with some TLC from the Foo'ies.
A little bit of house keeping; the end of season awards night has been booked and will be at the palatial grounds of the Chairman's house on the night of December 6th.
Yours in the ongoing search for the truth
Full Metal
Footnote: IF the VC had played the score would have been 20-3 so it wasn't that bad !!!!!
