Reflection through the haze of smoke

This author has embellished, laid the blame, stuck the knife in, run the gauntlet and sometimes written about the game in the evenings past.

This week shall be like no other.

The Touchers, after strong off season player buys, have started the season 4-0. They sit atop the table in wins and the 'for and against' tally.

In the early rounds of the season I have made the conscious decision to observe rather than contribute. Taking this back seat on Thursdays I have been able to reflect on 7 years of Touching. Including that last season which shall not be mentioned were Touching was not enough, you had to grab at sweat laden cloth tags off the hips of young chiselled opponents. Well I think I did it once across the 10 games.

In these reflective moments I have seen the will to win, the wanting to prove a point, the sheer determination to run from dummy half without passing despite for the last 7 years being reminded that its a low percentage play.

With the playing roster fully stocked at a consistent 13 Toucher's turning up each game we can confirm the following player retirements; Milt and the Locksmith will be fronting the media in the days ahead to announce that they have stood down as full time Touchers.

We will celebrate when the HOF inducts them into the Touchers Hall of Fame at the end of season gala at the fine establishment, Terrey Hills Chinese. Don't worry that you will have to wait 1 hour for the first course of Wonton Soup as the Chairman can fill that time with a speech. I'm serious, I was there at his 50th speech, he can fill 60 minutes, no problem.

The Locksmith a three time Premiership champion and Milt a two time champion will be presented with medals by Founding member of the Hall of Fame, HOF. Milt's speech will last 3 minutes 27 seconds, aligning the amount playing time he contributed across his 5 seasons.

Oh the game...yeah okay.

The Touchers faced the current cellar dwellers just over 12 hours ago and played down to their standard. A 4-0 victory and a performance like that just won't do when we cross over to play the younger teams who are in our draw.

Dropped balls, poor passes, lack of direction and that's only my critique on the VC's game.

Dishevelled is a word I will use to describe the VC's appearance when he eventually turned up. I will pop over before next game and show him the art known as 'ironing'.

As part of the Touchers constitution, we arrive at the game looking sharp and ready to go.

I must make make mention of the joy in seeing former Australian Schoolboy Jonty, in full flight. Its fair to say he like others, did not enjoy last season. It was a joy to all to see him grab an intercept pass and fly away to score the try of the game last night.

Housekeeping

The fees have been paid by the Chairman. $330.

He and the SuperCoach have got together and stated that with 16 players on the roster, that we are to pay $175 each. Now I manage a P&L for my lords and masters but I don't claim to be an expert on all things numbers on a spreadsheet. But $330 / 16 = $20.63

The balance we are told is towards some sort of Hedge Fund in Hong Kong.

Oh just on another 'unrelated' point.....isn't it nice to see the Chairman in his new Gold Ford Ranger this week.....things must be going well !!!!!

Yours in searching for MAGIC TIME

Touchers snort the sweet smell of victory

It was around September that I sat in close quarters with the Chairman as we plotted the playing list for the 2016 Touchers. The roster was at 16 on that cool spring day. We thought then it was too many. We deliberated over player skill on and off the paddock. Not that anyone was in true danger of losing their accreditation as a Toucher. As our creed stands as 'Once an OverToucher, always and OverToucher'. The decision had been made minutes after the completion of the 2015 season that shall not be mentioned, that we would return to the fields of glory and bring down the wrath of redemption after 3 years in the wilderness. If I think hard, I believe that over the years there have been about 30 Toucher's in our squad. To name them all would be superfluous to the needs of this little story, plus how can I remember them all after 7 years. But the core group has been there for those 7 years and there have been ups and downs. Moments of madness many times and I will share...
