A work in progress

To the readers of this article across this wide brown land and all over the world. I offer that I write from the heart. I am inspired by the positive thought of my fellow man.

So when taken to task for not publishing an article in Week 1 of the Belrose Touch Football Championship, I want you all to look in the mirror an ask 'yourself' why. Ask yourself why did this long suffering scribe did not deliver prose on the efforts our multi championship winning team after the first game of this spring summer series.

If you are not sure go back to the video tape of the game and breakdown how you went. Did you play your best game against poor competition? Or did you lower your high standards and pronounce that 'we won...thats good enough'.

Going into week 2 of the championship I was not flushed with the youthful vigour of a mid twenties male with it all in front of him. No I was concerned that this group of middle aged men had thought that winning was enough.

So when questioned by our Chairman on my body language as I arrived at the ground, I felt that I would keep these true feelings bottled up inside, as we were taught to in days past.

But as kick off arrived, I sensed purpose, I sensed hope, my senses also sensed an odour that could drop a wilder beast at full charge. Someone must have just had some yoghurt and forgot they are lactose intolerant.

The opposition was a step up from week 1. They even all had the same coloured shirts which shows they had some purpose.

The Toucher's were never really in trouble throughout the game. Even with our poorest completion percentage rate in 8 years. If I was only allowed one line to describe how the Toucher's performed last night, 'We are a work in progress'.

After going through the video into the early hours of this morning and pouring over my notes following the team de-brief pitch side after the game, I wanted to share some key points.

I, along with my fellow Touchers have been asking our esteemed vice captain to choose the right time to run from dummy half. Now I ask that you read my words carefully. I am not asking him to stop doing it, I am simply asking for the brilliant long serving founding member of the team to pick the best time. To have success at this play once from 28 attempts last night, would tell most people, even those who have never touched a pigskin, that maybe they should take another path to score a try. Now the great man does many great things on the flush green grass in spring. His back line play was sublime when he sent Jonty to the line. But its a low percentage play that should be driven out of the game. We hope one day, even after 8 years of Touching, that the Founding member heeds my sincere advice.

[The lawyers poured over that paragraph write up until the time this article was published]

Point two. I want to congratulate Big Kev for his start to season two with the Toucher's. Many of those better than me have suffered 'second year syndrome'. But when I witnessed his pass at speed from left to right during the game, a salty tear dropped from my eye, down my cheek and dropped lighty onto my beating chest.

'He must have watched my YouTube tutorial on passing to a player in a better position' I pondered.

My job there is done, his game as a ball running front rower is now complete.

I praise any man who knows his station on the field. So I give buckets of praise to another founding Toucher in Jonty. He stands like a colossus on the right wing and runs his corridors when provided with a saloon passage to the white line. However, I will be talking to the grand company Rhino Australia in regards to their ground breaking product  called Grip-Tec as a private sponsor for Jonty http://rhinoaustralia.com/grip-tec/ . To help Jonty when he is not given that saloon passage !!!!

Toucher's great, Rocket, does not. I believe, require the use of the Grip-Tec technology. He just needs us ball players to pass the ball to him in the correct way, like an egg on a pillow at stomach height.

If we had done this simple thing for the speedster last night, the scoreline would have looked a lot healthier. Some questioned was that it was fatigue that caused him to drop the ball 7 times after riding 700km's this week. NO. When Rocket runs in the hole which he knows how to do [VC maybe a class with Rocket], we must deliver the ball in the correct manner.

Bulldog and Muzz just do what they do. Bulldog is our roving player who is always on the attack. His efforts aren't wasted on hit ups that we get told to do. Hit ups are boring and should be banned from the Toucher's playbook. Remember what the 1984 Australian Rugby Union coach, Alan Jones taught us 'Rugby is a running game, you attack at all times'.

I look at Muzz in the spirit of how the late great Rex Mossop described George Piggins at the SCG and his running style '....he only knows one way...'. Muzz is a valuable asset on the field. But dont get too comfortable, we all get a spray of abuse at sometime during the season.

The Chairman and SuperCoach continued their show last evening. Its a special bond between to 50 years olds when they can parry an thrust, shove and kick. I know they lift each others games to new levels.

I am also know that they are looking forward to Yes vote on November 15th being passed so they can organise the nuptials. I myself can declare that I have picked out something special to wear at the double Bucks Party.

The inside word from their partners is, relief, that they can both now move forward with their lives once this relationship is officially public.

We are looking forward to BBB's journey to Mt Kosciusko base camp on the 8th of November.

He still wants to play next week but he is looking for clearance to wear this during the game whilst he stands out on the wing and avoids all contact.

Next week we look for the return of the Plummer's.

They have been in Australia's outback building on their fitness as we prepare for the finals.

The Sponsor also returns next week unless he is not feeding at the corporate trough of another 'Harbour Cruise'. We await an update.

Oh by the way we won 6-1 last night. Try scorers included Big Kev who was relieved to be off the nude run, Rocket, Jonty, Bulldog, Ben and probably BBB, I can't remember. It hardly matters does it?

Yours in the search for positivity and yearning inspiration

A Very Touching Christmas

Now that its the 1st of December, so now I can talk about the upcoming festive season we call Christmas. Any mention of Christmas before December incurs a substantial fine in my world. I am sure all of the Touchers in the corporation have written a list of the goodies they want to see under the tree. But I will come back to that as governance dictates that I write at least a few words about the game last night. We drew 3-3 ... thats it. OH I have to write more ????  OKAY G Plummer and the Locksmith almost tied for Man of the Match. However, Locky lost half a point when he passed the pill 6 feet over my head while I was showing the VC how one runs into a gaping hole to get clear and hopefully score the match winning try. I am sure I jumped but its doubtful there was much air between my size 13 cross trainers and the turf at anytime. So with the loss of that half point G Plummer got the trophy last night. Even with the 3 reserves, all of us had nothing left in the tank ...

Ignorance needed in Injury Management

Normally this article provides a detailed assessment and description of the previous nights game by the Championship team know around the world as the 'OverTouchers'. However, a dramatic turn of events had ensured this article take a different turn today. We have all heard of a players second year syndrome but  last weeks Man of the match, Rami, has broken new ground with 2nd game syndrome. Just on 8am this morning, the ball playing big man sent through the following note: "Small tear in the Achilles boys. No running for a few weeks...physio sessions for a while" Now lets just break that down but first strap yourselves in readers, this may hurt a little . I am stunned, nay, amazed how such a diagnosis can be determined within 12 hours of the games completion. Poor old Jonty had also sent through a note after last weeks game that he too had suffered an injury, torn meniscus, within a small amount of hours after the final bell. Now I thought that the pro...

Touchers new blood policy pays dividends

All good corporations have road maps for succession plans and the Toucher's are no different. With the average age of the mighty team getting higher with each day, the sub committee for Growth and Development approved the signing of a new Toucher, RAMI late on Thursday afternoon. I wanted to name him Rookie but the great Rocket has that name in his portfolio despite him being a key member of the team for 6 years. The playing roster was depleted last night, making the new signing brilliant timing. The following were away for different reasons; Scorpion/Sponsor/DG was in far North Queensland again feeding at the trough of corporate indulgence Rocket/Rookie/Leftie/ was away on assignment and wouldn't tell us were. Smith/Legsy was at home with Meningococcal, Ebola and a runny nose R. Plummer the greatest A Grade player of all time was in traction in North Shore Hospital with a hurty back BBB was of trekking to the base camp of Mt Kosciusko. Shouldn't be too ha...
