Round 3, 2011

BIFF, BARGE and a WIN against the odds + an apology

Date: 4th November 2012
With the Chairman heading north this morning on a scouting mission with his sidekick Pillhead, Full Metal Jacket your sporting writer with over 20 years experience in writing about the inside story's that matter, has been entrusted with the game reporting of the Overtouchers. I only hope I can keep to the standards reached by the Chairman in last weeks report.
The Overtouchers compete in an over 35 summer touch footy competition in the northern beaches of Sydney in the sleepy tree-lined burrow of Belrose
In opening I will be calling David Gallop and David Perry this very day to request an inquest into the Belrose Touch Football competition. Yes, they have no direct jurisdiction over the competition but they do hold some tenuous links to the Belrose Rugby League Football Club underway which our competition is run.
To allow so many under 35's to play against the older generation that are +35 years goes against everything I have been raised to believe in. Growing up in the tough streets of Beacon Hill in the 70's, 80's and 90's, I learn't that rules and strong governance are the key pillars of society. And that without these pillars we can only dive down into a sea of mediocrity [yes a 5 Syllable word!!!, Google it if you don't know the meaning].
BUT despite going up against not only the youth of the damned, the Overtouchers had to compete against a team with a 6 man rotating bench [Biggsy that's not a new piece of gym equipment so settle down]; the Overtouchers stayed strong, tough and ground out a 4-2 victory under the cloud of controversy.
I believe the lack of referring worked in favour of the winning team last evening. A short 3 metres and the younger teams lack of ball control only supported the dour game enforced into the Overtouchers by the vice captain.
Thrust and parry...back and forth...up and down...the Overtouchers wore down the youth of the blemished and stuck to its goal; "Losing wont be on our side today".
With Coach Harrison barking orders from the sidelines, the Overtouchers kept the youth of tomorrow deeply entrenched in their own half.
But there is clearly work needed on the left hand edge with communication in defence and at this time I wish to support Pillheads comment 'stay on your man Ballo'....'don't come in'. This old school long retired front rower believes wingers should do only three things; 1. Be seen 2. Not heard and 3. stay on their [BLEEPing] wing in defence.
Strong performances all round. Special mention to the Rookie for taking a shove from a current A Grader on the chin. Despite the offender only being a Valley United player and nobody could/should  fear them; it took a big man not to blow up. [Something I cannot say for yours truly].
All played strong in a night where for some unknown reason you could smell the tension in the air...it stunk like a bag of old forgotten North Sydney jumpers...long discarded since 1998.
The team should look forward to the return of strong running back rower Milton after his 2 week recovery in Mexico. Also the Board has been informed on the serious matter, now known as 'BIGGSGATE'. The Phantom who walks will be asked to present to the board and show due cause why his contract should not be torn in two. More to come on BIGGSGATE.
Yours in Touching
Full Metal
PS
I would totake this opportunity like to make a full and frank apology for my behaviour during the game last evening. I know the team, its supporters and most importantly my sponsors were let down last night. No excuses are given here. I only hope that I am selected in the squad next Thursday and in doing so I guarentee I will give at least 65% [heck I haven't given a 100% since my schoolies week on the Gold Coast in my tours in '89 and '91]

Touchers snort the sweet smell of victory

It was around September that I sat in close quarters with the Chairman as we plotted the playing list for the 2016 Touchers. The roster was at 16 on that cool spring day. We thought then it was too many. We deliberated over player skill on and off the paddock. Not that anyone was in true danger of losing their accreditation as a Toucher. As our creed stands as 'Once an OverToucher, always and OverToucher'. The decision had been made minutes after the completion of the 2015 season that shall not be mentioned, that we would return to the fields of glory and bring down the wrath of redemption after 3 years in the wilderness. If I think hard, I believe that over the years there have been about 30 Toucher's in our squad. To name them all would be superfluous to the needs of this little story, plus how can I remember them all after 7 years. But the core group has been there for those 7 years and there have been ups and downs. Moments of madness many times and I will share...
